Assignment from Mr Leong (12/3/09)

Year 3

Topic: Mother’s Day Card (Using Microsoft Paint)

1. How can you initiate, sustain and direct activities in an ICT lesson to motivate students?

Initiate Activities: Show the students the product of a simple mother’s day card that available in the internet. The teacher ask the students, have they made any cards before using Microsoft Paint and what are the tools in Microsoft Paint they should use to create specific shapes for example rectangle, circles, lines , colors, text (to create the words) and etc.

Sustain and direct activities: The teacher have to mobile around and to make sure they are doing the right task. Some students tend to do different thing. For the first task is asking them, what shapes and the layouts they want the card to be for example oval, circle, rectangle, big, small and etc. The teacher also can tell them, what they can design in the card by drawing their own images or images they got from the files, for eg. the images of balloons, cakes and etc.

2. How can you help students plan, monitor and modify their cognition to develop self-regulated learning of students in ICT?

Year 3: Typing short composition (Microsoft Office 2007)
As usual, for ICT lesson, the students grouped in pairs. This is basically by giving them tests during the lesson, just to monitor do they know how to use the basic tools in Microsoft word (for example, changing the font type, size and colors). In words 2007, the interface is totally different from the normal MS Words they used before which is MS Words 2003.
For each group, there will be a paper for the test given and which they have to follow all the instructions, for example :

Topic: My Father
1. Change the font into Comic San Ms and the font size into 14.
2. Align the title to the center.
3. Start typing your composition.
4. Save your work into My Documents.

Once they read all the instructions, they should be plan and discuss to each other, how to do all the instructions. The teacher have to be monitoring and mobile around the class to make sure they do the right thing. Common mistake is the name and the name of the place should be start with capital letter. So, the teacher have to remind the students, by asking them, the name should be typing using capital letter. Then, they have to discuss to each other, how to create the capital letter. From the discussion, they will be learning new things and start to modify their mistakes.

Test from Dr. Leong

Year 1 (7.30-8.00): Switch On and Off the Computer

1. Self-concerns

As usual, I disciplined them before they enter the ICT lab by taking off their shoes, arrange it and lining up. Then, I have to remind them the basic rules in computer lab they to follow such as no running, have to keep quiet and etc. If they aware of the rules, it is not difficult to control them. The important is engaging the students to do the interesting activities. They would love to do any activities that connected to ICT.

Before they start doing the work on their own, I have to explain and show them which button to switch on the the computer , which button to press to swtch on the monitor and the steps how to shut down the computer.

Then, let them to do everything by themselves by sitting in pairs and helping each other. I just monitor them by move around the class. I asked to rise up their hands, if they need helps. So far, most of them were well-behaved and concentrate doing their work. I just can hear they had a small fight who want to do the task first with their partner.

So far, they able to discipline themselves in the lab, because if they are not well-behaved, they are not allowed to use the computers.

About 5% of the students, did not know how to hold the most in the correct ways. By showing them the right ways, they managed to follow what I have taught them.

2. Task Concerns

The learning environment at that time was everything well-planned, since the students engage to do their own activity and as long as they follow the rules. Have no problems with the computers since all of it are new. The Year 1 students are already exposed to the Windows Vista Interface.

They managed to do the task given to them, they pressed the right buttons to switch on the System Unit and Monitor. I did not expect the students can do much since they are new to Windows Vista and managing their own work using the computers. But what really suprised me, without explain to them twice, about 95% of them, managed to shut down the computer using the steps that I have taught them before they start to do their work.

At the end of the lesson, I praised them with all the works they have done by clapping their hands. It is one of the positive reinforcement. Basically, all the things I have taught based on the lesson plan that I have structured for the lesson.

3.Impact-learning concerns

It is very important for the teachers to know what are the pupils needs. For the ICT subject, of course the students really wish they want to carry out the activities by engaging them using the computers. By giving the task, it is a respect for them.

The impact from not being Authorative to the students, was really worked by without shouting to them. By praising them in psychological ways, it was easy for me to manage and controlling them throughout the lesson. If they feel appreciated, the impact of the learning is they love the lesson and manage to do their own task which are given to them.

The impact can also be bvalued from our obejctives, whether it is achived or not. About 95% of the students, can finish their task on time given, which is be able to do the Switch On the SystemUnit and Monitor, anddo all the steps how to shut down the computers.

Week 9: Second Semester

YeaR 3 ((7.30-8.00):
TYPING SHORT COMPOSITION
For the introduction, I showed the students the steps how to open Microsoft Words 2007. Then, I asked them to sit in pairs.
Ask them to open Microsoft Words 2007. Before they typing, I instructed them to change the font type into Comic Sans Ms and the size into 14. Most of them, are still not familiar with the Microsoft Words 2007.but by showing them where and how to change the font and the size, then they managed to do it.
My objectives are not sucessfully achieved due to insufficient of time. The assembly ended almost at 7.35. Therefore, most of them not managed to finished the five sentences as I mentioned in my objectives.
P/S: I was observed my supervisor today, Mr Aswandi. Well, he said that I was being so Authorative towards the students. I guess, I need to change that for my next class. I practiced it when I teach my Year 1, I guess it worked. No shouting....:)
Year 1 (9.30-10.00)
Switch On The Computer and Shut Down the Computer
Introduction:
I asked them to name all the basic parts of the computer they have learned in their previous lesson. They suprised me with all the correct answers.
Then, I showed them how to switch on the computer from System Unit, by showing which one is System Unit first, then followed by which button to click to switch on the Monitor and also the steps how to shut down the computer.
I asked them to sit in pairs. Before that, remind them not to do anything before I instructed them to do so. So far, they followed what I have told them to do.
Most of the students, managed to Switch On the Monitor and System Unit by pressing the right button.
My objectives are 98% successfully achieved, since some of the students did not know how to hold the mouse properly. So, the problem is, they cannot move the arrow very well to do the steps of shutting down the computer.
